This series was produced on the first day of Luke’s BigCi Residency stay. We had been preparing for this stay for months, finished the long drive and were settling in to the space when he and his facilitator thought it would be good to focus some anxious energy into art making.
Not only was the experience and environment completely new, but the art form was also relatively new to Luke at this point, so the work stands to capture the stress of the unknown, and the artist’s ability to capture and utilise it, turning the feeling into art.
This triptych features three variations on a theme, all works capturing focused energy starting from upper left and moving to the lower right of each work. This energy is in the form of deep scratches and lines on the collagraph. The texture of the plate provides a mildly textured background in pale grey, allowing the black lines to stand out stark against the background.
(This work has previously exhibited as part of BigCi’s October 2023 Open Day).
