Rough Surface was one of Luke’s first experimentations with utilising found objects as surfaces within his practice. Playing on the text of the sign, Luke has made additions including gravel, glass beads and bright textural paint splatters in order to highlight texturally what is made so clear visually.
The work has a bright yellow background, with large black text which states ROUGH SURFACE in all caps. There is a small amount of text in the bottom right corner which states ELITE TRAFFIC, followed by the company number. Flourescent yellow and orange, as well as black paint splatters have been added to the space around the text, and brown and grey gravel, along with glass beads have been added in order to create a complementary texture - the work feels as the sign reads.
