Preserving Energy, 2023
Collagraphic print on watercolour paper using black intaglio ink & found tree sap
approx. 36 x 31cm
$300 unframed
This work was produced within the artist’s time at the BigCi Residency in Bilpin. Upon speaking with other artists staying on site, Luke decided to experiment with incorporating sap into his practice as a pigment. This began with experiments with diluting the sap to create a pigmented substance to paint with, but ultimately led to experiments in print making.
Here, the plate was cut to resemble a piece of shed eucalyptus bark. The artist then added marks inspired by those described to be often seen on the surrounding trees, which the artist also explored through touch. The smells and sounds of the environment around Luke also inspired his rhythmic etching methods.
Found sap was then added at the press, leaving thick areas of crystal sap on the final print, which have been placed in clumps and sprinkled more finely in other areas. The sap retains its red and orange colour and stands out on the black, white & grey print.
(This work has previously exhibited as part of BigCi’s October 2023 Open Day).
