Helium, 2020

Acrylic & aerosol on paper

84 x 67 cm

SOLD - This work is now held in a private collection.

Helium combines soft aerosol work with translucent layers of acrylic, applied in both traditional and alternate ways. The background of this painting is the crisp white of unmarked paper, the mid and upper portions of the page have then been lightly sprayed with aerosols in purple and blue, creating a translucent, somewhat blended layering. Then, a medium brush has applied watered down acrylic, giving the look of ink and adding a further translucent layering in greens, yellows and blues, mixing and blending in this mid/upper section. Finally, sticks and leaves have been used, dipped in white paint and hit at the canvas, creating thin, white lines, giving the illusion that in some areas, paint has been scratched away.

(This work has previously exhibited as part of 'Push & Pull. Stroke & Stab' at Goodspace Gallery, Chippendale. Dec 1st 2021)
