This piece was created during the artist’s time at the Bilpin International Ground for Creative Initiatives residency, on what was a challenging and upsetting day for Luke and his team.

That morning, we found out that one of the facilitators involved in the residency and a long time part of this team had been injured in a car accident. We are all so grateful that he has since made a full recovery, but on the day this work was made, we weren’t sure how he was doing, and it was difficult to share information.

Luke and his facilitator Catherine decided to put as much of the anxiety and upset as we could into this work, channeling our chaos energy into this work. Catherine ripped up what was going to be one long board, and Luke proceeded to scratch, rip, stab and tear at the board with a variety of tools until this work was created.

The piece is printed with black ink, and captures Luke’s energy through thick, black linework, and large black areas where the cardboard has torn away. In some places, the board has been torn through, leaving the stark white of the paper.

(This work has previously exhibited as part of BigCi’s October 2023 Open Day).
